50 days of summer

Today marks the end of my summer break. I'm back to work today, gearing up for a new school year --- a very new year for me as I'm back in the classroom again. I'm looking forward to this new adventure but it's a bittersweet feeling, leaving behind my fun and relaxed days of summer with Nora. I am so thankful for the time I had with her this summer. I saw so much happen - she learned to crawl, started babbling more, began eating finger foods, started pulling up on furniture, tackled climbing stairs, sprouted her first tooth. I was there for it all and am lucky to have a career that allowed me the time to experience this. We had lots of fun reading books, playing with toys, swinging, going on playdates, attending story time at the library - it was definitely a busy and fun-filled summer.

On my first day off for the summer, I made the decision I was going to take a picture every weekday we were home together. At the end of last week that totalled 50 days {weekdays}. Thanks to the ease of a phone with a camera, I was able to snap pictures while we were both at home and on the go. I have compiled them all together...a pretty fun to document our summer together and the experiences we had.

Take a look and you'll see why I've been very absent from the blog this summer. I wouldn't have done it any other way.

After having drinks with a friend last night I realized it was high time to get back on this blog and post a photo of Nora at eleven months. I'm quite late in posting this time --- she'll be one year old in just ten days. Absolutely amazing to me. We have had a blast watching Nora grow and learn this summer. She is more fun than we could have imagined.

It's been close to a month since I last posted. And I've enjoyed some time away from the computer. I've still tried to read my favorite blogs but it was a nice feeling being free from the "need" to post. I'm coming back with some updates and some changes.

Nora is 9 months old. Just crazy. She is developing quite the personality too. Laughing when she's happy, excited, or humored and crying when she's mad, sad, or frustrated. She's saying "da da" and "ma ma". Her favorite method of movement is rolling. She can roll quite fast and with rather good precision (we have had to baby proof). No crawling forward yet but some backward scoots. She is quite the little baby --- Hubby and I are proud.

I have three more days of school which means three more days until my role as an elementary instructional coach comes to an end. It's a funny transition. I'll be transitioning to a totally different role but I'm thrilled and excited. The world of third grade awaits me and I'm excited to set up a classroom, read books, teach math (yep, sis), and spend my days with kids again. I'm leaving behind some great friends on my coaching team. We had a cozy breakfast together today; our last gathering as a team. They gave me a darling necklace with Nora's picture and a card with beautiful personal messages. I am so thankful and lucky to work with wonderful women.

Summer is almost here and it's going to be a busy one. We have a few quick weekend trips planned but I know my time off will be filled with activity: setting up previously mentioned classroom, doing some cleaning and organizing at home, and going on outings with Nora. I don't want to keep her (or I) cooped up in the house all summer so we have some outings planned at the library and playgrounds. I'm excited to watch her explore new things.

breathing during a break

My posting has been sketchy at best the last few weeks. Work has been so busy and at nights all I want to do is play with Nora and bum on the coach with the DVR and my Hubby. I've been lacking for both inspiration and motivation to post. The minute I felt like my blog became a must rather than a want, I knew it was time for a break.

I have three weeks of school left. I'm looking forward to focusing on Nora this summer. Trips to the park, library, play dates, games, naps, walks - I'm ready for a summer like I've never had before. Maybe I'll pick the blog back up but only if it's a natural want, not a must.

I'll start this break with an 8 month photo of Nora. She actually is 8 1/2 months now but we just took her 8 month photos this past weekend. And I felt pretty bad about it. But, that is life. No matter, she's still cute. :)

bliss list ~ april

I know I say this every time but holy moly this month went by quickly! April was so busy --- the crazy days at work flew by and a night it was play, eat, and to bed...for all of us! In fact, things have been so busy I've really neglected the old blog. Luckily, I had a few posts already created and set up for publishing but I miss the time to think about things I'd like to share and reading posts from all the other great bloggers out there. Nonetheless, another month has passed and I found time to squeeze in a list of things I enjoyed this April.

The Royal Wedding ~ Yep, I watched it. I'm not ashamed. It is history, after all. And after spending a month in England (London and Brentwood, Essex to be exact) in 2003 and another week there in 2007, I enjoy watching some of the pomp and circumstance of these events. I wouldn't say I've been obsessed (Did you see the Royal Wedding episode on The Middle? I swear, I'm not that bad!) but I did set the DVR so I could watch the event in its fully glory. :)

The Amazing Race ~ Still talking TV this is a show I have loved for years and continues to be a Sunday night staple for Hubby and me. I love this show. It's definitely a reality show but in my opinion is maybe a little more real than some of the other shows out there. It's fun to watch the teams compete, see the contestants crazy personalities, and cheer for your favorites.

Flats ~ I've tried heels but they just don't like me feet. My feet love flats. Lucky for me, there are many cute shoes out there in shoeland. I love this time of the year too - I'm not quite ready to wear flip flops or sandals but can wear my flats without socks. They're easy to dress up or wear casually.

Books ~ I have the pleasure of returning to the classroom next year (3rd grade!) and while I already have some books for my classroom library they are most likely a little dated. I need some new titles that are current and that kids are into reading. Enter, Scholastic! I loved their book order pamphlets as a kid and still love them as a teacher! I made a nice big book order this week for myself and am excited about the possibilities for my classroom library next year. I can't wait to see that Scholastic box up in the front office!

For the fourth week in April I thought I would conclude my bits about ways to be Earth friendly with some greener products we have been using as of late.

I really like this hand wash from Method. It's simple and low scent and biodegradable. They even have refills available so you can be even more green and refill with less packaging waste.

While we're talking about Method products, I recently bought this shower spray.

We're hoping it will help prevent mildew and grim build-up and the fresh smell is a nice bonus.

Speaking of cleaners, Method has some great other products and I have also checked out Seventh Generation as well. I have bought some of their All Purpose Cleaner, Dish Soap, and Laundry Detergent.

Another product I'm really excited about is Garnier's biodegradable shampoo and conditioner. I've often thought about all of the soap waste that goes down the drain. I'll feel a little better lathering up with this product.

There are many more green products available now which is a great thing. And you would think they would be significantly pricier but I really haven't found that to be the case. In fact, many of these products offer coupons on their website. Are there any green products you have tried or used that you love and would recommend?

Not a lot to cross off, but a few things and that makes me happy. I hope to do some yard work either this weekend or next so that will help me accomplish some of my outdoor goals. I've decided to merge lists as until the end of the school year, everything will become long term. I've also added a few items to the list. Hubby is working from home two days a week now and we plan to move his work space from the basement to our upstairs front room. Before we do that, I would like to give the room a fresh coat of paints and will try to paint the ceiling as well. I've never painted a ceiling and we have the beautiful popcorn finish (I know you're jealous) but it is a good sized and shaped room to start with AND my talented mother said she would help me.

Time to get things done is definitely limited these days. I often wonder what I did with all my time before Nora was here. I know my house was a lot cleaner! These days instead of insisting my house be spotless, I'm more concerned that what Nora touches and interacts with is clean. And wanting everything to be safe for her, I found some "green" bleach (if bleach can be green) and it did a great job cleaning up and sanitizing her toys. I try to give them a dip every now and again.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day has always made me think of Arbor Day, a holiday often celebrated in my home state of Nebraska, where it originated. So, I think of trees when I think of Earth Day. Planting trees and giving back to the Earth in that way. A couple of years ago we planted a new tree in our front yard and started our own edible garden. Our bitty tree still continues to bloom and grow just a bit each year.

Every summer we plant our own edible garden. Tomatoes, peppers, jalapenos, and onions go into the ground and we fill deck planters with herbs - basil, rosemary, cilantro - great for cooking all year long.

Last summer, Hubby and I became huge fans of our town's Saturday farmer's market. We went weekly to grab fresh and locally grown zucchini, onions, squash, corn, potatoes, raspberries, and we ate well the whole week through.

Hubby and I try to eat locally as often as possible, which is Earth friendly because buying local means less fuel to ship produce to stores and typically, less pesticides and herbicides used while growing. I am in full support of that. Last year I read a little about "the dirty dozen". It was interesting to learn about the foods that should, if possible, be bought organically and locally. It really changed my perspective on what I buy, especially now that we have a tiny eater in our home. Several friends told me I should check out Door to Door Organics, a organization that delivers fresh and local produce to your door on a weekly basis. Last month I bought a Groupon for a discounted package to be used with Door to Door Organics and I am quite excited to give it a try.

Eating better (and I mean quality, not necessarily quantity) has become more important over the years. When I became pregnant with Nora, I really started thinking about what was going into my body. And now that she is here and is starting to eat solids, I am even more conscious of what we stock in our kitchen. The options of edible gardens, farmer's markets, and buying local have helped me in my quest to be a bit more healthy while supporting a healthy Earth.

Now that Nora can sit up and roll around, she is all about her toys. I think back to those early months, guessing we probably had more than enough toys and wondering if she'd ever even play with them. Well, we're there and yes, she plays with them all. Here are a few of her favorites:

The Bright Stars Rattle and Shake Barbell Rattle was one of the first toys she could grab onto and she still likes to shake...and try to put an entire end in her mouth. She has a few other rattles she likes...the Sassy Rattlin Rings and the Bright Stars Grab and Spin Rattle.

For her Christmas stocking we got Nora the Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes (we have an older version without the moving beads). She LOVES this toy. There's something about the music and light combo that really grabs her attention. And she is slowly learning how to turn it on by pushing the button.

Valentine's Day brought a new toy - Playskool Busy Balls: Rhythm and Sounds. They are the perfect size for her to pick up and shake. She will roll them and reach out and scoop them back to her. Playskool also has the same product with Patterns and Colors and Terrific Textures. Terrific Textures might be making an appearance for May Day. :)

Links are good. Whole, they are a fun toy that can be drug around and banged on a high chair tray. Separate, they are great entertainers until dropped on the floor and then it's onto the next one. Nora's links are a very easy toy to throw in her diaper bag when we're going out.

This Melissa & Doug Plush Rainbow Stacker will be Nora's newest present (the Easter Bunny will be delivering it to Grammy and Papa's house). I wanted to get her something that still appealed to her need to grab and put things into her mouth, yet I want her to start working on some skills, thus the stacking.

I feel like Nora will soon be moving out of the baby toys and will be ready for some more learner toys. Once she can pull herself up, I'm looking forward to getting out her LeapFrog Learn and Groove Musical Table but I also want her to have some toys she can sit and play with.

Moms out there, do you have any toy recommendations for 9 to 12 month kiddos? I have an itch to fill my Amazon cart!

Energy. Being more energy efficient. This can be both easy and difficult.

We actually made a few energy efficient upgrades in the past couple of years. The first was our new dishwasher. We had been without one for the first 2 years living in our house. While we got used to washing everything by hand, it sure was nice to pass off some of the dish washing duties to our trusty, energy efficient dishwasher.

Following the dishwasher we took the plunge to upgrade our air conditioner. It was as old as our house and acted about two times older than that. It ran constantly and our bills were high. Enter our new {and HUGE} heat pump.

The great thing about this machine is it serves as not only our cooling source in the summer but as our heat source for much of the fall, winter, and spring. When the temps bottom way out, our gas furnace kicks on, otherwise we can use electric heat much of the year. We have noticed major improvement in our bills. While it was a big chunk of change, we have seen the cost benefits and even received a nice tax rebate the year we bought it.

Over the past few years we have worked to switch out the light bulbs in our home to more the LED and CFL light bulbs.

Their marketing ploy is they will last much longer than the regular light bulb and I have to say since using them, I have not had to replace one bulb. There are few drawbacks in my opinion.

1) They aren't always as bright as the old light bulbs and I think our family room is a little on the dark side because of that.

2) They look a little funky but guess that's part of their charm. I have, however, seen newer options that look more like the traditional light bulb.

3) It is difficult to find energy efficient bulbs that are truly compatible to be on a dimmer. They are expensive and don't really dim --- more like off to super bright. But even with those draw backs we have gone the more energy friendly route in terms of lighting at our house.

Speaking of lighting, something super easy to do is turn off lights and appliances in a room you aren't in or using. That was something my parents always taught us. And it saves money too. And turn off that computer. If you can, unplug it too. Saves a lot of energy and money towards electricity. I cringe at the thought of how many computers remain on at my workplace all day and all night. Even though they're in sleep mode, they're still on. I make sure to shut down my work computer at the end of each day.

Other energy efficient options include choosing a water efficient faucet, shower head or toilet. Lowes has several options {click here}. Speaking of Lowes, they have great discounts on energy efficient appliances this time of the year. We took advantage of this opportunity two years ago when we bought our dishwasher. With all of the laundry I'm doing lately, I am awaiting the day to invest in a new washing machine. I can dream, right?

I recently finished a really good read. Heard of it?

I'm a little late in jumping on this series but thanks to my buddy, Leah, I read and loved the first book in this series and am now number 61 on a waiting list at the library for the next book. Hope those 61 people before me are fast readers!

While this is a young adult book, it was so well written that I felt character connections and suspense like I would in an adult novel. During my reading Hubby read in the paper they are beginning production of movies based on the book series. I'm not sure how I feel about that. While I would like to see how they play the fantasy out I think all the hype could be too much, especially when I'm hearing "Team Hunger Games" talk {a little too parallel to Twilight}.

If you're looking for a fast and thrilling read, this would be a great choice. And if you're hesitant about the fantasy/science fiction genre, just give this one a try. You won't be sorry.

Nora's hair has been all the talk from the minute she was born. I am serious. The first word I heard about her was in regards to her hair. And in the beginning it was so sweet and manageable.

But then somewhere around week 6 she woke up one morning and it was no longer sweet and manageable. It was crazy and wild.

And from that day until it finally grew out, her hair had a mind of its own.

And then...one magical day...the hair decided to rest.

Soon the day came where it was tickling her ear and it was time for a tiny trim. She was such a good and patient girl.

There were a few, just a few days when her hair was so nuts I wondered what it would like to have a baby with no hair but I simply cannot imagine Miss Nora any other way. Smooth, dark, light, unruly --- it makes our Nora, Nora!

The topic of reusing.

I think I was raised to be a "reuser". I grew up in a home where we had more than we could want but yet were taught how to waste little. My mom used old shirts and towels for cleaning rags, we re-used zip lock baggies and foil if they weren't beyond repair, we washed sour cream and cottage cheese containers to be used again to pack leftovers. Little did I know what was just common sense at the time would be something so common place 20 some years later.

Over the past few years, Hubby and I have tried to be very conscious to lessen our amount of waste through reusing. We started small a few years ago but now it's become a natural part of our day. Here is a look into our life as "reusers".

Napkins

I bought my last paper napkin about 2 years ago. We realized we were using way too many paper products in the way of napkins, paper towels, etc. Our solution: use cloth napkins. The transition was really easy. I skipped off to Kohl's with my 30% off coupon and bought about 20 napkins and we are in a very nice routine of using a cloth napkin with each meal and washing with our towels. So easy. And you feel kind of fancy while you eat too. :)

Cleaning Rags

As mentioned above, this was something I was already doing. I was no stranger to reusing old undershirts, washcloths, and tea towels for cleaning purposes. My mom never cleaned with paper towels so doing that would have been totally foreign to me. It's quite easy to clean with reusable rags --- just use and wash. But, be careful to only wash rags with rags. While we use nearly all natural cleaning products, I just don't want to risk the chance of our towels mixing with cleaning products. And if you'd prefer not to go the route of the old t-shirt or towel, there are many nice microfiber cloths that serve the purpose quite well.

Containers

Yep, just like my mom, I've been known to save a sour cream container or two for leftovers. But over the past few years I've become a little squeamish about reheating plastic Tupperware. I just don't like the idea of parts of plastic melting off and going into my food. So, a couple years ago I invested in some nice Pyrex reusable dishes. I have no qualms about sending or taking leftovers in these containers. And they look pretty too.

Hubby and I also prefer containers to zip lock baggies. The thought of throwing away a plastic baggie every day seems really wasteful to me. For example, we send a tiny slice of banana with Nora to the sitter for her cereal in the morning. If I put it in a zip lock baggie, we would be throwing one of those baggies away every day. Kind of bad. We found some perfect Nora-sized Rubbermaid containers for her food so I just throw the slick in one of these and all is good.

Reusable Grocery Bags

I've been using reusable grocery bags for quite some time now. Not only do they look fun but they are a much better alternative than loading your car with plastic bags. I have collected about 8 bags and I like that amount in case I need to make both a grocery and a Target run...I can use bags for both stops. At first I had a difficult time remembering my bags but now it's second nature to grab them from my trunk before I head into the store. The bonus: many stores like Target and my grocery store, Hy-Vee, offer a discount of 5 cents per bag. A nice little reward as I usually use at least 3 bags per stop. And our grocery store offers a spot to recycle used plastic bags because sometimes you just need to get plastic.

Cloth Diapers

A few months ago I posted about our adventures in cloth diapering. Things continue to go well and we love our gDiapers. If you click the link above you can read about our decision to use cloth over disposable. In short, while some of it came down to money (we are definitely saving with this route), a lot of it came down to the environment. We both itched at the idea of throwing countless diapers into our trash weekly, which would then go to a landfill to sit for hundreds of years. Understand, I am not trying to be preachy and if disposable is for you, I completely respect that decision, just as I hope you would respect ours to use cloth. This was the best option for us. And we are really happy with them. Since introducing Nora to some solid foods her poop has been different than when she was strictly on a milk diet. Most people's number one reason for not going cloth is dealing with the poop. Until we started solids I never felt like that was an issue. But now it's just...different. Our solution: a diaper sprayer.

We bought this just recently and it has been a great investment. But the great part about this purchase - we only paid shipping because we were able use money from a Craiglist sale of some extra pre-fold diapers we had. Nice trade-off! I had heard about this said diaper sprayer on Young House Love. Hubby followed their diaper sprayer installation methods and we are now easily spraying off Nora's diapers.

So that's what I've got on the topic of reusing. I know if I sat down and really thought about it, I could probably come up with countless other ways Hubby and I save and reuse. I'm sure many of you are doing great things everyday and maybe one of my suggestions will peak some interest.

bliss list ~ march

How was your March? Mine was a warm-up, cool-down crazy month! We enjoyed some incredible weather one week and freezing temps with snow the next. I guess that's the way March is. I am very ready to welcome April and some warmer temps --- and probably some April showers. The spring season leads me to my first love of March.

Longer Days ~ My favorite part of daylight savings time and spring is the start of the longer day. I love that the sky is still light at 7:30 pm. And it will only get better. There's just something about more daylight that lifts the mood. For me, I guess it means the final months of school and the approaching summer. It also feels like we have more of an evening to enjoy. Now if we could just get Nora to stay up just a bit later...

Health ~ We had a sick February and beginning of March. With Nora's RSV, sinus infection, double ear infection, and my quick bout with a stomach bug, I am very thankful for health and wellness. Just as spring brings warmer days, it also usually bring healthier days. I'm ready to open up the house, air everything out and bring in some freshness. And here's hoping we can keep our health streak up for awhile.

Hy-Vee ~ Our new Hy-Vee grocery store opened in January. It is HUGE and AMAZING! I love it. While it has taken me awhile to navigate the new isles and areas, I appreciate the variety of items, the array of produce, meats, and cheeses, and their increased organic section. Shopping trips there are still like an adventure!

Murphy's ~ One of most favorite beverages. Hubby introduced me to this drink years ago but for quite some time it was incredibly difficult to find. Enter or new Hy-Vee store. Their Wine and Spirits section is INCREDIBLE and always have Murphy's on hand. LOVE IT!

Our Camera ~ We got our camera last summer before Nora was born. I did quite a bit of research when shopping and thought about what type of camera would best suit our needs. I wanted one of good quality but also one that would be portable and easy for a no-photo-skills person. After several searches and reviews we landed on this Canon:

I couldn't be happier with it. It is very easy to use, has many different settings, holds the charge beautifully, and even shoots some nice quality video. It has served us perfectly and has allowed us to capture some pretty great shots.

Only 23 days until race day. I registered yesterday. No turning back now!

I had hit a low point the end of February and early March. I would like to make excuses {sick baby, lack of sleep, bout with a stomach bug, spring break, guests} but there really isn't any use to excuse. This is for me, to prove to myself I can be a runner again. I'm not worried about finishing in a certain time bracket, I just want to finish and feel good about it.

My goal was to get back at it this week and I have run three days thus far. Yay me.

Today is World Water Day. Interesting fact gleaned from Real Simple: the US ranks number 1 in bottled-water consumption and it takes up to 2,000 times more energy to produce a bottle of water than to run the faucet. I will stick to my Nalgene bottle, thank you. And Nora likes it too.

I also checked on the status of our city at America's Least Wasteful Cities. KC wasn't listed but St. Louis was number 19. I also took the test, which was interesting. Some of the items surprised me as being resourceful, like checking books out from the library versus buying books, but I guess that act is aiding in less production, etc. Another item that peaked my interest --- a rain barrel. Hubby and I discussed getting one of these last year but we would need some serious help redirecting our drain spouts. I thought Hubby and I did pretty well but I scored lower than the National average. I think my lack of taking public transportation hurt my score but living where we live, there isn't much for public transportation. Still, it gave me some things to think about and with Earth Day approaching in April and my goal to do a few more Earth-friendly things, I'm going to think about some of their recommendations.

nora ~ 7 months

Seven months! That sounds so old. My baby is seven months old. After battling RSV, a sinus infection, and a double ear infection during her sixth months I think we were all ready to welcome a new month and renewed health! Nora has felt great for the last couple weeks and we are both thankful to have our happy, fun baby back. And boy has she been fun! She is sitting up by herself, plays independently, is eating some solid food, laughs, shows us what she wants...she has become quite the little person!

Nora's stats {as she enters month 7}

Bedtime: Around 7:45 pm. With daylight savings time last week, the days are getting longer and soon it won't be dark when it's Nora's bedtime. For now, she is still tired enough to go to bed before 8 pm. However, she is much more content during the evening and we have been able to push back the start of bedtime routine until 7:15 pm. Ideally this summer (when I am not working) we would like for her to go to bed just a tad bit later, say around 8:00 pm, and maybe sleep a tish later. Hey, I can dream, right?

Wake-up time: Lately, Nora has been waking up on her own between 6:30-6:45 am. Most mornings she'll just talk and babble to herself until we come in to get her. I'm a little bummed she does this on the weekends too...we had such a good thing going with this 7:00-7:15 am thing but I can be grateful she entertains herself when she wakes up.

Naps: We have cut out the brief morning catnap completely and have adopted a new schedule. This was due in part to her bout with RSV. We had to give her breathing treatments every 4 hours and adjusted her schedule around that. So now, Nora takes a morning nap from 9:30 to 10:15 or 10:30 am and then an afternoon nap from 1:00 to 3:00 or 3:30 pm. She is still very easy to put down and definitely lets us know when she is ready to get up!

Eating: As I mentioned above, Nora's schedule took a change during her sixth month but it was perfect timing as we began to incorporate more solid food into her diet. She is still taking a 6 oz. bottle every 4 hours (at 7:00 am, 11:30 am, 3:30 pm, 7:30 pm) and now has a "breakfast, lunch, and dinner". She has a slice of mashed banana with 3 Tablespoons of oatmeal around 9:00 am, around an ounce of a fruit and a veggie at 12:00 pm, and about an ounce of a veggie and a slice of mashed banana with 3 Tablespoons of rice at 6:00 pm. It has been so fun to introduce Nora to new and different foods. We love how big she opens her mouth when she sees the spoon!

Favorite Toys: Nora has really been into her toys lately. She sits and plays with them for solid chunks of time, grabs for what she wants and reaches far to find something.

And she loves to jump. I can't even get pictures of her anymore in her jumperoo because she's always moving! This week we tried the doorway jumper and I think she liked the change in view!

Firsts/Milestones: During her sixth month, Nora had lots of firsts with food. And she got to try out her highchair.

She also hit another huge milestone - sitting up! She looks like such a big girl when she sits up and we can tell she is loving her independence!

Now that title right there makes it okay to buy new shoes, right? Have you heard of TOMS? For every pair of their shoes you buy they donate a pair to someone in need. Pretty neat. And so are their shoes. I have finiky feet {read: VERY narrow} so I shouldn't really risk buying online without trying on but see there is a little boutique not too far from me that sells them. Maybe a shoe shopping trip in my future?

They even have wedges, although I don't think I can pull these off.

I know it isn't officially spring yet but daylight savings time and my upcoming {short} spring break have me in the springy mood. With the assumed upcoming warmer temperatures comes an urge to clean, purge, freshen, and organize. There are a lot of things I want to do in the way of spring cleaning and am itching to get started. Normally nothing would be in my way but this little bug makes getting multiple tasks done quickly a little more difficult.

I hope to use some weekend nap times to work on some of my tasks but know they'll extend into the summer months, which for me fortunately means a break from school and some extra time at home. In order to be realistic with my goals I am making two to-do lists - one for the short term {read: I can do during a 45 to 120 minute time period} and one for the long term. My plan is to conquer the list as I can, use my time well, but still give myself some "me" time occasionally during her naps. Okay...on with the lists!

To say I cannot believe Nora is 6 months old is an understatement. Before she was born I remember figuring out when she would hit that milestone 6 month mark. It would be in February. What would she be doing? What would she look like? How would we feel about her? Fast forward to February and 6 months is pure joy!

Her six month started out with RSV. A gravely cough, runny nose, and a hoarse cry prevented from getting some pictures on her actual 6 month birthday (which ended up being okay since dark skies would have prevented a good photo shoot) so we waited until the following weekend when Nora was feeling better and more like her happy self. Hubby and I were lucky to each spend days with our sick baby. We both had President's Day off and took turns the rest of the week. It was nice to get in lots of extra cuddle time with Nora.

Month 5 to month 6 were so fun! Nora is such a good baby - so happy, loves to play with her toys and with us. Her eyes are so thoughtful and inquisitive. I can tell she is thinking about the new discoveries she makes each day.

Not only has she started interacting more with toys, she also LOVES to eat. We do cereal every night and I'm excited to start introducing her to fruits and veggies this month!

Nora's stats {as she enters month 6}

Bedtime: Still between 7:30-8:00 pm. It's usually rare she makes it to 8:00 pm. She is so act and playing hard now so is ready to crash with her bedtime bottle.

Wake-up time: When we don't have to wake her, she'll sleep until 7:00-7:15 am. WONDERFUL! During the work week we have to wake her to go to the sitter's. If I don't have any early morning meetings, we like to let her sleep until 7:00 am. If I do have to be to work early, we usually have to wake her before 7. Hubby and I prefer her to wake on her own...she's so much happier! Guess I can't blame her - I really don't like to be woken up either! Since month 5 we rarely have to go into her room at night. She has truly been sleeping through the night and it has been such a blessing!

Naps: She's slowly weaning from that quick morning catnap. She still takes two longer naps a day - one in the morning from around 10:30-11:30 am and one in the afternoon from 1:00-3:30 or 4:00 pm. She is super easy to put down - we can just lie her in her crib and after talking to herself for a bit, she will rest.

Eating: Nora eats about 6 oz. every 3 to 4 hours. We also do a tablespoon of rice cereal before bath time. She LOVES to eat her cereal! This month we will start to introduce fruits and veggies. I'm excited to see her reaction! Once we start with solids, I'll have to play around with her bottle amount and schedule. I'm hoping we can start to give her a bit more in a bottle, fewer times a day. We will see - we'll just follow Nora's lead.

Favorite Toys: Nora likes a lot of different things these days. Especially things she can easily put into her mouth! She loves her links and can finally get a good hold on her rattle.

Firsts/Milestones:

This past month Nora really learned how to interact with her toys. She will sit in her jumperoo or her exersaucer anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes, happy as can be.

Nora is also starting to "talk" more. She has discovered she can use her tongue to talk and make noises so we often see her sticking her tongue out when she's trying to talk. I think Nora recognizes the camera now. She is transfixed by the orange light that flashes before I snap her photo and is starting to bring out that smile when the camera is present.

Nora has also learned the to play peek-a-boo. She'll pull her burp cloth away from her face and smile if we ask, "Where's Nora?". And she LOVES it when we hide from her and surprise her with a peek-a-boo.

bliss list ~ february

A quick month, February was. But still things to love. Here's my list of bliss:

Coffee Grinder ~ This was a Christmas gift from my parents and Hubby and I L-O-V-E it! We currently use the self-timer option on our coffee maker during the week to finish up some ground coffee we had but on the weekends, it's whole bean, all the way. There is definitely a difference in taste and when we actually have time to enjoy a cup or two, our grinder is a great perk.

Stretchy Pants ~ Thanks to my buddy, Michelle's post, I was reminded by how much I love these pants. Without looking back, I can probably guarantee they have made previous lists but with all of the snow days and cold weather weekends, they have been a wardrobe staple this month. I seriously need another pair!

Awards Season ~ Yep, I'll admit it. I like award shows. I don't have to watch every minute but I do like to have it on to glance at every now and then. And even more shameful to admit - I really like the red carpet. Yes, I'm one of those people. So when it's cold and crummy out January and February, the awards are my vacation.

Time with Hubby ~ Last weekend Hubby and I were lucky to enjoy a night alone. Just the two of us...no friends, no family, no baby (although we did miss her and enjoyed frequent pictures and videos via text). My parents agreed (without my convincing) to come to visit and stay with Nora while we enjoyed a night away. Thanks to Groupon, our night was relatively cheap but very fun! We stayed in downtown KC at Hotel Phillips. Fun to stay at an older hotel with a more modern feel.

We enjoyed a complimentary bottle of wine at the hotel restaurant and then hit the town. A little wine and cheese at Tannin Wine Bar (formally known as JP's Wine Bar), yummy rolls at Nara, and some good beers at The Flying Saucer. We had so much fun! And we even stayed out until 10:30 pm (our goal was 10:00...just made it!). Knowing Nora was in excellent hands, we can't wait for the opportunity to do something like that again. Time alone with Hubby is a rarity these days.

I've never received a blog award before and it's always exciting to know people are reading my ramblings about my life. The award comes with a few rules:

Thanks Erin @ Tales of Our Journey...! Erin and I started reading one anothers blogs a little over a year ago. I've never met Erin except through the blog world and she's always so sweet to read and comment on my writing and I try to return the favor.

Share 7 things about myself.

1) I'm a mom, which is still a crazy thing for me to grasp! Over the past 6 months I have learned a lot about myself and how much more value there is to my life. I love this little girl of mine!

2) I like to run and used to be a very avid runner. It all started in 5th grade when I joined Track Club and continued through Junior and High School as I joined the Track and Cross Country teams. Running didn't always favor me...I suffered two stress fractures in High School - one in my leg and the other in my foot. An interesting fact: I haven't run in a race since High School but am working hard as I'm entering to run in KC's upcoming Trolley Run and the Rock and Roll Marathon (will run a half) in Phoenix next January.

3) I have two amazing siblings. I'm the oldest and would like to think they have always looked up to me and I have been a huge influence in their lives. :) Really though, we enjoyed each other in our childhood and have a new and fun relationship in adulthood. I love spending time with my family and always look forward to the laughs we'll have together.

4) I really like coffee. I start out every morning with a cup of coffee. Typically during the week I drink from my travel rug but on the weekends I love to sit down with a cup to read the paper or blogs. But something else about me...I can't drink warm coffee past 10:30 am. Not sure why but it just loses it's luster after that point. But iced coffee...any time!

5) I have a thing for dishes. When I'm at a home store I can't resist looking through their collection of plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, and serving ware. Lucky for Hubby, we've filled our kitchen cupboards to the max and we don't have a hutch (a wish list item!) so I have to keep my dish buying to a minimum. Hubby however does know of my eye for dishes and surprised me with these last year.

6) I love to read magazines. I think about 3 came for me the other night and Hubby remarked, "You sure get a lot of magazines." He is right. I just like them. They're easy to read, quick, you can read them put them down, come back and find your spot again, and they have lots of good tips. So I will keep my magazines, thank you!

7) I celebrated my 30th birthday in the hospital. Not as dramatic as it sounds. The night of my 30th we went in to begin my induction. Not quite the 30th birthday most people plan for but two days later I received the best present anyone could ask for.

winter weekend {part 3} + a note on friends

This past weekend we traveled home to Nebraska for my lovely friend, Sarah's 30th birthday party. We stayed with my other lovely friend, Leah and her husband and baby boy, Archie. Let me tell you a little about these two ladies. They have been two of my best friends for more years than I can count up in my head. I met Leah as a 5 year old in Sunday School and we both met Sarah in Junior High School. Our friendship strengthened through the years and has seen many life milestones together...high school graduation, college, first real jobs, marriage, and now children. Though we all live in different cities we are still besties and can pick up right where we left off.

We've been through a lot together, us three. And I am so glad I got to be there when both Leah and Sarah entered their 30's. 30. Can hardly believe we're all 30. As I type it, it seems impossible. The memories I have with these two are insurmountable. We still laugh at our "remember when" stories and still know what one another is thinking. I love that we have known each other for decades and no without any doubt will continue to enjoy each other in the decades to come. After all, our kiddos are already instant buddies.

Leah, me and our babes. We are giving Sarah some time...she needs to enjoy married life for a bit! We'll catch her the next time. :) All three (plus our Hubbies AND our babies) are looking forward to many more years and memories together.

If I won a free makeover for one room in my house, I would...

Make over our laundry room.

Our laundry room is kind of eh. It serves its purpose...a place to wash and dry clothes, house some cleaning supplies, store sheets and towels, but it's quite boring. I've been vowing to paint it for about 2 1/2 years now and still haven't done it {and the room isn't that big, people!}. We're also a little less than thrilled with our washer and dryer. We bought our home and these appliances right as front loaders were becoming popular...and they also came with a hefty price tag. One Hubby and I weren't fully ready to succumb to in our very early newlywed years. But now with Nora, we are doing laundry a lot more frequently and with her diapers, our washer and dryer are whirling nearly every other day.

So, if I won a free makover for a room in my house, I would make over my laundry room. And here are a few pictures for inspiration.

I got my first issue of House Beautiful magazine last night! It was a gift from my mom this Christmas and I've been looking forward to its arrival. Not that I have tons of time to read these days but a magazine is easy to pick up when I do have the time. So excited to flip through these glossy pages!

And in other reading news, I finished my naptime project this week. It extended a little past naptime but I'm pretty proud I was able to finish a book.

It held my interest all the way through but the end put it over the top...went from a 3 star rating to a 4. If you're looking for a quick read, this is a good one to turn to.

let's talk dips

Hubby, Nora, and I were invited to a Super Bowl party this past Sunday. We were asked to bring something to share and I wanted to bring something new. I'm a dip lover. Love taco dip, Rotel dip, cheese dip, french onion dip...it's all good to me. But I wanted to us to do something a little different than the predictable. Enter this fabulous poblano chile bean dip.

Want to make it?

1 poblano chile pepper

2 15 oz. cans of kidney beans, drained

3 Tbsp. butter

1 small yellow onion, diced

2 closes garlic, minced

1 8 oz. can tomato sauce

1/4 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. pepper

1/4 tsp. hot pepper sauce

Place poblano under a hot broiler, blister and char the skin. Place in bowl and cover. Let stand and cool. Add kidney beans to a food processor and pulse until mashed. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add butter and melt, then add onions and garlic. Saute until soft. Stir in the beans, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, and hot sauce. Peel, seed, and chop poblano and add to skillet. Simmer 10 minutes. Serve warm with crackers.

Unique and so good! If you're in need for an easy but different dip, give this one a try.

I've just experienced my seventh snow day of the season. That's a lot. I don't doubt many were necessary and although I'm not looking forward to the extended school year or the lack of upcoming (once scheduled) vacation days, it was sure sweet to spend some extra days with Nora. We didn't do much --- played, read, ate, napped --- but it was quite fun. Nora changes so quickly and I was excited to watch some new discoveries...like spinning around in her exersaucer and fully playing with the toys on it, attempting to hold her own bottle, and giving me big smiles whenever I smiled at her. This year's snow days have definitely ranked at the top. Here's some shots of our days together.

Nora is so active and busy these days. If she's lying down, she wants to kick and pull on her legs. If she's sitting, she wants to stand. She still likes to be held but I have a feeling those days are limited. Over the past couple of weeks I've tried to cuddle more with Nora. For some reason, I don't feel like I took full advantage of that cuddle time in her early days. I know we held her a lot but I fell victim to thinking I needed to take care of other things too and I fear more often than necessary I chose silly tasks over taking time to hold and cuddle Nora while she was sleeping. She does such a great job falling to sleep on her own now that I don't find harm in snuggling with her a bit if she falls asleep in my arms after a bottle before nap or bed.

Today was one of those times I actually felt like a mom. I laid Nora down for her afternoon nap and like usual, no problems and she fell right to sleep. After about 40 minutes I heard her fuss. Pretty normal so I waited a few minutes and went up and gave her the pacifier. Not more than 10 minutes later I heard her crying again. I let her cry for a bit but her cry was more than just fussing, it sounded a little distressed. I went up to offer her the pacifier and she looked me right in the eye and grabbed my hand as if to say, "Don't go, Mom". I backed out of the room and stood right by the door. Piercing cries that broke my heart. I went back in and as soon as she saw me she quieted. Normally we don't take Nora out of her crib until naptime is over but I could tell something wasn't right. This mom needed to break the rules. I took her out and her crying continued. I sat down on the bed with her, rocked and hummed to her. After letting out a little burp she laid her head against me, relaxed, and closed her eyes. It was a bad bubble that was disrupting her sleep. I was able to rock her to sleep and felt comfort in the fact that I was able to comfort her. A true mom moment, I believe. So I thank you, blizzard. I needed that moment with my daughter.

bliss list ~ january

Is January seriously over? What a weird month! Weird because out of the 31 days, I worked a total of 16. Nuts. Which leads me to my first bliss list item...

Snow Days ~ After coming back from holiday break we had 4 snow days. We'd get rolling with a week and then a day (or two or three) off. While I don't look forward to making up these days, it was nice staying in comfy clothes and playing with Nora all day. Nora couldn't believe it when she woke up on our third snow day in a row!

Tea ~ I was having a conversation with a friend at work during lunch and we talked about our love for tea this winter. Then we both realized what we probably loved most about drinking tea was holding the warm mug in our hand. Still, in addition to holding a warm mug, I do love sipping the warm stuff. One of my season favorites is Celestial Seasonings' Candy Cane Lane. It's pepperminty enough to allow it to extend past Christmas.

Slippers ~ I love leaving my shoes at the door and wearing slippers this time of the year. My feet get cold pretty easily and it helps the slip my feet into something a little warmer. I've already worn out one pair this season. Oops!

Gummy Smiles ~ Nora smiles so much more these days. I remember when she was an itty baby and I often had wondrous thoughts of when she would smile more often. We're finally there. She smiles at us in the morning, when we play with her, pick her up from the sitter's...pretty much anytime we look at her she will smile. It's so sweet.

Not a big bliss list this month but it explains my month loves quite well...keeping warm and smiling with Nora!

When I'm at home with Nora --- which I have been quite a bit this month due to snow days --- I try to take advantage of her nap times to get a few things done. Her morning naps are on the shorter side, around an hour or so but usually her afternoon stretch a bit longer to anywhere from two to two and a half hours. That is a good chunk of time time to cross some things off the to-do list. Sometimes I'll clean, throw clothes in the dryer, blog, and when I'm feeling like I have nothing else that needs to be done, read. Magazines are honestly the easiest thing for me to read these days. They're quick and I can put them down and pick them up without having to recall what I had previously read. I actually get quite a few magazines too so keeping up with them is a task in itself.

One of my favorite magazines is Real Simple. I have always loved this magazines from its organizational tips to its advice to its recipes. I always look forward to seeing this one arrive in the mail. Something I started doing a couple of years ago was keeping an inspiration file. It's nothing elaborate - just an accordion file but I have it organized so I can stash articles or pictures that strike me and know I'll want to read or see again. And I have gone back to the file so I'm pleased that this project is a success.

It had been a LONG time since I had updated the file. My magazine basket was overflowing and I have magazines dating back to September of 2009. Time to skim, tear, and file. This was my naptime project last week during a snow day.

What do you do with old magazines? Toss or recycle? Maybe pass on to someone else? Do any of you skim and tear and save for another day? Do tell!

baby bliss list ~ part 2

It has been 3 months since I published my first baby bliss list. Wow. A very long time. And there are lots of items we have used in loved since that last post. Looking back at it, I have to smile. At the time, Nora hated all things stationary...papsan, swing...we must have had tired arms! Thank goodness she is content in both previously mentioned items plus some new favorites. We have even transitioned past a few of the items on the old list. Shows our little baby is growing up! Next up after 22 weeks of life...

Burp Cloths

A repeat from the last list, these burp cloths are still a BIG favorite for Nora and us. Not only are they still great for cleaning up baby messes but they have become Nora's lovey. She hugs it in her car seat, holds it while she plays, and sleeps with it at nap and bed time. She loves it so much, during this nap she had two!

Pacifier Clip

A true lifesaver when in public, these pacifier clips. I try not to have it attached to her at home anymore as we are trying to avoid giving her the pacifier unless she really needs it but when she leaves for the sitter, it is intact. I'm sure it gets could just a germy attached to her body as it would on the floor {especially after I saw a little guy at our sitter's pull on Nora's pacifier clip and put her pacifier in his mouth --- I swear, it was kind of cute} but it is definitely a reassurance when out at Target or a restaurant and she loops her finger in the hook and pops it out. The clip keeps it from hitting the ground and saves us with a quick recovery.

Eucerin

Our little baby inherited my family's dry winter skin. Poor thing. With the dry winter months come sore, red cheeks.

We use Eucerin morning and night and are able to keep her redness under control. The fact that she is bubble blowing, drooling machine doesn't help her case at all. But this stuff is like magic and can usually help clear it up and make her chubby cheeks look better in a matter of minutes.

gDiapers

A couple of months ago I told you of our adventures with cloth diapers. This item may not be on all of your own must have list but for us, our gDiapers are definitely a must! I won't go into a ton of detail about why we chose to go this route {if you want to read more, click on this link} but we are definitely gFans. We love the way they fit Nora, they are so easy to use and clean, and the big bonus --- she looks so darn adorable in them! She is still in the small size and we just received the medium size in the mail today so we'll be set when she's ready to make that next size jump.

Jumperoo

I can't find a product image of our jumperoo, which is the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders jumperoo from Babies R Us but when doing a search, I see that line is discontinued. I should have figured as much because we scored a great deal on it right before the holidays. The perfect gift for our little jumper! She LOVES her jumperoo. And seems to "get it" more than she does her exersaucer. She likes to bounce, which she kind of does on one leg, loves the lights and sounds and is starting to study and touch some of the objects and toys. She can spend quite a bit of time in it if her mood is right!

This past Wednesday, January 19, Nora turned 5 months old! And what a fun five month old she is! Everyone warns new mothers that time goes quickly and that is the absolute truth. Yesterday I was walking with Nora down the stairs and she was sitting on my hip. For some reason, I was caught a little off guard by that. My baby is old enough to support herself and sit on my hip. When did this happen? She has undergone so many changes this month and has had many big milestones. With the holiday break from school and the ridiculous amount of snow days (4!) we have had during the month of January, I have gotten to spend a lot of time with Nora. It's been fun to spend some extra days with her as she's beginning to make daily discoveries and show us that she is a true companion rather than a lumpy little baby {although I do sometimes miss that stage!}.

Nora's Stats {as she enters month 5}

Bedtime: Still between 7:30-8:00 pm. We have tried to stretch and keep her up a little longer but it's a struggle. After a long full day at the sitter she is usually ready to start her bedtime routine around 7:00 pm.

Wake-up time: We've pushed Nora's morning wake-up time back to 6:45 am. We've got the routine down now so we're able to give her a few extra minutes of sleep. Typically, we have to wake her. She plays so hard at the sitter's she is too tired to wake up on her own! And because of that, we have had several nights of FULL sleep...without Nora waking at all. So nice.

Naps: Still pretty similar to month 4 but with a few adjustments. Nora still takes a morning catnap around 8:00 am or so but it's usually only for about 20 minutes now. She takes a shorter morning nap too, around 1 hour or a little less. She still takes a longer afternoon nap, anywhere from 2 to 2 1/2 hours. I think because she sleeps longer at night, her nap times are shorter during the day.

Eating: Nora still takes 5 oz. every 3 to 4 hours. We've tried to stretch her to 4 hours but she really prefers to eat every 3 hours. We have upped her first bottle of the day to 6 oz. Our sitter mentioned Nora has been ready to eat sooner in the morning so we thought she might need a little more in that first bottle since she has gone so long since eating the night before. We're also attempted to begin about a tablespoon of rice cereal at night before bed. At first she HATED it but things are going much better now.

Favorite toys: Nora still likes many of the toys she enjoyed in the past few months. I think she's able to understand them and use them a little better now! She loves her bumbo and I like the tray so she can have access to toys or other objects.

Firsts/Milestones: Nora had several milestone minutes this past month. She ate cereal for the first time and rolled over for the first time! She is talking more too. She likes to carry a conversation with herself and shadows. And the bubble blowing is back! It disappeared right around Christmas but Hubby was happy to report last week when he was home with Nora that her love for all things bubbles has returned. Nora is smiling more than in previous months and is starting to laugh. I can't wait to hear those laughs and giggles in the months to come!

It has been a LONG time since I have run. A very long time. I used to run all the time. My mom told me she'd never seen someone so dedicated. {I think she meant obsessed} Until I married Hubby and my days became a little more lazy, I was outside pounding the pavement in extreme heat, bitter cold, and snow packed streets...it didn't matter the weather or terrain, I was out there. Once I met Hubby my dedication slowed a bit. I still ran quite a bit but wasn't as faithful on a daily basis. Then pregnancy came. I was pretty good at the beginning of my pregnancy but as my time came to an end, so did my running days. I can definitely count the times I have worked out since Nora's birth on one hand. Not too many. But it's time to get back at it.

I have two big motivators to get my feet back into those shoes. I'm going to compete in my first race since high school cross country. The plan is to join a few co-workers for the 23rd Annual Trolley Run in Kansas City in three months. I've always wanted to do this run. It's a fairly flat 4 mile run through some of Kansas City's prettiest neighborhoods. And having friends to run with will make it even more enjoyable. Speaking of friends, my best buddy, Leah and I made a pact over a year ago that we were going to run in the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon in January of 2012. Mind you...not this year. We made this decision last year when we were both pregnant and realistically wanted to give ourselves and our bodies time to heal and get back into shape. I'm so glad we decided to wait until 2012 because I would not have been ready for this year's race which was this past weekend. So I have about a year to get ready for the half-marathon and am so excited for a fun weekend away to Phoenix with Leah and our husbands.

My morning runs will be a bit more challenging with an infant but we are finally in a good place with Nora. Now that she is sleeping through the night and I have our morning schedule down, I feel pretty comfortable throwing a morning run in there. I'm going to have to start out slow. I have not run in quite awhile and the last time I ran I was carrying around a few extra pounds. Most likely I'll begin with walking a few days a week and then gradually building up my pace and time. I really hope to be back to my running self soon so that in April I'm ready to rock those streets!

I'll keep you posted on my success. I'm hoping this post and this blog will help keep me accountable!

I think nearly all new parents look forward to the day they can answer yes to this question: "Does your baby sleep through the night?". I can't tell you how many people asked us that question. And always my answer was the same. No. My baby was only 6 weeks old but I got that question a lot. At 6 weeks, Nora was still waking during the night to eat and I didn't see an end in sight. When I was asked that question I felt like we were failing somehow. If the question is being asked, shouldn't my answer be yes?

Being the routined, organized person I am, I will admit the thought of Nora sleeping through the night and having a predictable eating and napping schedule was VERY appealing to me. But looking back I think I felt like she had to be in this schedule when in reality, she was setting her own schedule. And ironically now, her current schedule is not all that different from her schedule when she was younger.

But on to the important part. How did we get Nora to sleep through the night...because she does and has been now for over a month.

I have to be honest, we didn't have success with anything until Nora started at her sitter's. I went back to work on November 1st and prior to that, Nora was still waking during the night to eat around 3 am or 4 am. After my first week back we realized in order to help her sleep through the night we needed to do two things. One, do not change her diaper when cried during the night. When we laid her down to change her she screamed (we think because she wasn't really awake) and she woke up and was up for the count. Two, decrease the amount of milk in her bottle. We went from 3 oz. to 2 oz. and then 1 oz. So in a way, we gradually weaned her from needing that middle of the night feeding. Both of those decisions were a huge step in the right direction.

Nora started with our sitter in the middle of November. When we checked in on her day she let us know Nora did great and napped beautifully. I asked if she laid her down to nap asleep. She said no. Hmm. We had been putting her to bed asleep for months now. In fact, if we laid her down in her crib and she happened to wake up, Hubby and I knew we were in for an hour long battle of getting her to settle down and fall back to sleep. And now our sitter was informing me that she laid Nora down for her nap AWAKE. And she slept. The light bulb was burning pretty bright. We needed to do the same thing.

That very night we did our normal night time routine with Nora (low lights, bath, lotion, bottle, swaddle, bed) but this time we laid her down awake. We shut the door and held our breath. Cries. But it was okay. We were going to wait three minutes, go back in and put her pacifier in for her. Three minutes we went back in, helped her, walked back out and we never had to go back in. A month later we follow the exact same routine and it's actually rare that we even have to go back into her room after we lie her down. She gets it now. When we lie you in your crib, it's bedtime. We've been able to do the same things for naps and it is bliss!

We put Nora to bed between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm and she usually gets up between 6:30 am and 7:00 am. Granted, there are nights when we hear her fuss in the night. We try to wait about three to five minutes to see if she'll settle herself and if she doesn't, we go in, giver her a pat, her pacifier, and shut the door again. Works nearly every time. And Hubby and I are enjoying full nights of sleep again.

winter weekend ~ part 2

I am SO very late in posting pictures from the holidays. I'm probably committing a major faux pas by even considering to post them now but I don't care. Some of these are too cute to pass up.

Our first Christmas Eve with Nora was spent quietly at home. We went to church, put her in bed, and ate a nice dinner together. The next morning our little girl woke us up...not so eager for the presents but for her bottle! We made her wait a little bit before she got to see what Santa brought her.

After the coffee was made, Hubby and I were ready for Nora to enjoy her first experience with presents. Maybe it is because she is beginning to reach the stage where she likes to grab hold of things but she was really into the wrapping paper and looking at her gifts. It was fun to watch!

After all that unwrapping, Nora was pooped!

We had a calm Christmas Day. Nora napped, Hubby's brother came over for lunch, I napped, Hubby napped...we relaxed! The plan was to leave for my parents' home the next morning but in the afternoon, Hubby suggested we leave that night to surprise them. We packed ourselves and Nora in a record 90 minutes (I even got the diapers washed...wow!) and were on our way. It was so fun to surprise them! They were thrilled to see Nora. And I think they were glad to see Hubby and I as well.

Nora had more Christmas goodies to unwrap from her Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle and Auntie. What a lucky baby!

It was a fun holiday and I am so lucky to have been able to spend lots of time with Hubby, Nora, and my family. Wow how we are blessed!

20 weeks

Funny how fast 20 weeks goes after pregnancy than during pregnancy. Little Nora is 20 weeks old today!

It's crazy to think back to those early weeks of pregnancy and compare to what life is like now. At 20 weeks, I looked at is as being half done. Now at 20 weeks, I think of all the wonderful things to come.

bliss list ~ december

I'm having a hard time with this Bliss List. Not because I'm at a loss of things that have made me blissfully happy this month. On the contrary, there have been many things that have made me smile. It's narrowing it all down that has been the hard part but as I sat last night, my first bliss moment was a no-brainer.

Baby Sunggles ~ Last night I was home alone with Nora. She woke up early from her afternoon nap --- 3:30 pm --- so by the time 7:00 pm rolled around she was nearly unbearable. I knew she was exhausted. She was crabby, fussy, and had red eyes. After her nightly routine of a bath and jammies, I sat down to give her a bottle. Nora NEVER falls asleep with her bottle. Sometimes you think she is but she's just super relaxed, eyes closed. Last night, however, exhaustion caught up with her and after her bottle she was out. I put her up to my shoulder to burp her and I was reminded of those early baby days when she would be blissfully asleep after feeding. She would snuggle in on my shoulder and I would listen to those baby breaths and noises. I could eat her up. I held her a little longer last night, enjoying the moment.

Health ~ After spending nearly half of the month with an awful cold, I am so thankful to feel normal and healthy again. I hate when you know a cold is inevitable. You get that scratchy swollen throat and you know you're in for a seemingly never ending battle with the Kleenex and a Vitamin C fix. It seems my colds linger ever since I had pneumonia three years ago and rest is sort of a rare occurrence these days but I managed to kick my cold just in time for Christmas! Thank goodness!

Peppermint Mocha Coffee-Mate ~ In an effort to lesson my trips to Starbucks AND to take a healthier spin on holiday drinks I have been pouring splashes of Coffee-Mate's Peppermint Mocha to my morning coffee. I really like the minty zing it adds and even though the holidays are nearing to a close, you better believe I snatched up another bottle when I was at the grocery store this week!

Twinkle Lights ~ One of my most favorite parts of the holidays is the lights. My husband reminded me Chirstmas lights aren't very green. True, but they are so pretty! I love it when our little downtown area pulls out the lights and decorations. I get a happy feeling when I drive down the street and see lights adorning neighbor's homes and can catch a peak of their tree lights through the window. I so enjoy the glow of our own tree lights early in the morning and in the evening. Hubby is so thoughtful to my Christmas light obsession that he made sure he plugged in the lights if he was the first one downstairs in the morning or the first one home from work in the evenings.

Holiday Greetings ~ During the month of December, I always look forward to getting the mail. I LOVE to receive holiday cards, photos, and letters. I enjoy reading cards and see pictures of friends and family and display the photos year round so we can look back at family and friends...will also be a great thing for Nora as she grows older and she becomes familiar with people. We were quite generic and did a picture this year...no card, no letter, just the picture. Thank you, Shutterfly, for cute designs and quick processing!

winter weekend ~ part 1

A couple weekends ago we experienced our first taste of winter. My grandfather passed away on December 11th and knowing that we wanted to attend the funeral, travel plans were in the works. We would be traveling to west central Minnesota during the middle of December. Never an easy feat. Traveling anywhere in the winter is difficult let alone the snowy, icy midwest. The weather reports weren't looking very promising but we wanted to give it a go.

We decided it would be best to drive to Omaha Wednesday night, stay with my sister, and then she would join us for the travel up north. It was great to have her along and she did a great job keeping Nora company in the back seat.

Driving to Minnesota, I was reminded by how spoiled I am living through winters in much milder Missouri. Granted we have very chilly days, see both snow and ice, but as we were driving down the snow-packed, icy, frigid highways, I was thanking my lucky stars I didn't have to grip the steering wheel so tightly on a daily basis. Finally after 9 hours of driving, we arrived at our destination --- snowy Battle Lake, Minnesota. We stayed at the home of my uncle and his fabulous friend and this was our view from their sitting room.

Even though we were there for a sad reason, we had the most wonderful time with family. We don't often travel up to that area so it was a very needed time to catch up with everyone and introduce them to Nora, who was a huge hit! All of my Dad's 4 siblings were there with their kids and grand kids, and many stories and laughs were shared. Nora even made a new friend.

She also had lots of cuddle time with her Grandma and Grandpa and her Great Aunts and Uncles, who were all pretty smitten with her.

After two very short days in Minnesota, we hit the road again, dropped my sister off at her home, and stayed the night with some great friends. I was so happy to spend some time with my buddy, Leah, and Nora was thrilled to spend time with her boyfriend, Archie!

Nora spent 24+ hours in the car over the course of 5 days and was FABULOUS. We couldn't have asked for a better traveler. She was even willing and ready to get back in it on the way to her sitter's Monday morning.

Last Sunday, on the 19th, Nora passed the 4 month mark. The time from 3 months to 4 months went so fast. I returned to work, we celebrated Thanksgiving, Nora had her first major road trip {future post}, and we prepared for Christmas. She was a champ during all of these transitions, celebrations, and milestones.

During her third month, Nora's personality really started to show. She can be quirky, happy, crabby, and cuddly. And I love all of it. Her smiles melt my heart and I can't help but look over my shoulder and watch her watch me as I leave a room. She's so aware of herself and her surroundings now --- starting to stare at people and objects for longer periods of time, grabbing hold toys with her tiny fingers. The other day I saw her looking at her pacifier that had dropped beside her. She stared at it for about a minute. It was as if she knew what it was and that she wanted it but couldn't figure out how to get it. I love to see things slowly starting to click for her.

Nora's Current Stats

Bedtime: 7:30-8:00 pm {So easy now...she lies right down and rarely fusses...a blessing!}

Wake-Up Time: 6:40 am {She typically wakes before then but we are usually able to get her back to sleep with the aid of her pacifier. Most days we have to wake her to get her ready for the sitter's. Sometimes we are lucky on the weekends and she'll sleep until 7:00 am.}

Naps: Has a quick 30 minute catnap about 1 to 1/2 hours after she wakes up then usually has another morning nap for about and hour or hour and a half. Has a longer afternoon nap every day for about two to two and a half hours. Love that we can depend on that.

Eating: Every 3 to 4 hours, about 5 oz. per bottle. She doesn't always finish her bottles but is a good eater. We're still dealing with some spit-up after eating...sometimes hours after eating but it seems that nothing is wrong, she's just a spitty baby.

Favorite Toys: Nora likes to be upright. She likes to sit in her exersaucer but doesn't really know how to play with any of the toys yet. The other day I caught her touching a few of the toys but I think it may have been an accident!

She also loves this rattle. When I shake it she will stare at it and if I hold it in front of her she will reach out and grasp it with her fingers. She'll shake it around although I don't think she gets that she's doing the shaking. Nora will stare at this book that I actually got at Target. I think she likes the sparkly pictures.

Firsts/Milestones: Placing Nora in front of a mirror is hilarious. I like to hold her up before or after her bath and let her gaze at herself. She stares for a minute, the smiles and shakes with excitement. I can't get enough of it. She's also taken her bubble blowing to a new level. She now sticks her tongue out as she blows and sometimes will let out a shriek of excitement as she does it. I now understand why parents think their kids are the most adorable things in the world.

holiday traditions

This will be Hubby and my third {married} Christmas together. When getting ready for the holiday season this year I started to think about traditions we would begin with Nora. Then I realized Hubby and I already had a few traditions of our own.

Clearly our first year together in our own house welcomed the opportunity for many traditions. It's funny how you hang on to memories of your youth. We both enjoyed turning up the holiday music while giving the house a festive feel. Hubby remembered snacking on peanuts and M&M's. I added in the cider and we had a sweet decorating party.

Even though we knew Santa probably wouldn't be visiting us that first year, we still wanted to have stockings. Hubby had the great idea to pick out one anothers stockings. I chose his and he chose mine. I think we both did a great job choosing the perfect one. This year, we were able to continue that tradition as we both picked out Nora's stocking together.

A couple of years ago my mom started giving me pieces to Willow Tree Nativity Set. This is such a beautiful set and I enjoy putting it out each year. I have memories of setting up my mom's nativity set. When we were younger she had a simple Mary, Joseph, and Jesus figurine set but then moved into a nativity set given to her by my grandmother. I'm not sure why, but I always enjoyed getting those pieces positioned just so. Now I have my own to arrange each Christmas.

When the decorating is done Hubby adds one last touch --- placing the Bible underneath the tree. This was something his family did each year and I think it is a great tradition. Twinkling lights, glitter, bows, and traditions aside, He is the true reason we celebrate Christmas.

I tired using some nature for our holiday decor this year.

I know they won't last through the whole Christmas season but they definitely add some natural beauty for now!

I wish I was a bit more creative and crafty when it comes to decorations. The best I've done in the past couple of years is this and my simple homemade advent candles I worked on last year.

pedestal {winter}

Last month I told you about my new pedestal. My fall decor lasted a bit longer this year than in previous years. Two reasons. I decorated later this fall than in years past. I really believe in celebrating one season at a time. So, I really didn't have a problem keeping my pumpkins through the end of November.

Last weekend Hubby and I did our Christmas decorating. I was excited to add my new pedestal to the mix. This season, it has moved from it's spot on the sofa table to the mantel --- the pedestal has earned a star position.

Deciding what would go under the dome wasn't too difficult. I picked up these fun, glittery snowfalkes at the Holiday Mart the same day I got the pedestal.

I LOVE Sarah Richardson from Sarah's House. I became a fan this summer when I DRVed reruns of her HGTV Canada show and watched them during many sleepless pregnant nights. And now...she's going Christmas!

I was bummed to learn I missed the original air date but my good old DRV is set for the repeat airing tomorrow at 1 pm. Tune in to HGTV to see her Holiday Party. Yay!

early morning

It's early. And it's Saturday. But I'm awake and everything is so peaceful. The lights are glowing on the Christmas tree, I'm snuggled under a warm blanket, and the coffee is brewing. Funny how I approach the early morning differently now than before.

The weekends are so different now but different in a good way. Much of our time revolves around a sweet baby girl. But life hasn't totally changed. We still enjoy {some} rest. We still have our early morning coffee with the paper. But our priorities have shifted. Much less hustle and bustle and more cuddling and playing. While I don't mind our busy weeks and rushed week nights, I look forward to our slow-paced, peaceful weekends when the rush is done and we can spend time admiring smiles and coos.

fall weekend ~ part 5

We had much to be thankful for as we celebrated a great Thanksgiving with family. It has been so much fun adding Nora into the mix. Since she is the first grandchild on my side, she definitely gets a lot of attention! She had plenty of company while she ate, played, and even slept.

Nora finally met her new friend, Archie, who was born 2 months after her on October 20th. I can tell they are going to be great friends just as his mom and I have been for nearly 25 years.

I am so very thankful for family and friends and for my little family. I am very blessed.

It's the sound of a new season. A special season.

The first time I hear the bell ring, I get a little excited. It's with that bell I realize the holiday season is nearing. I love this time of year. I like the cooling weather, the early evening, the first snow flake, the comfort food, the holiday carols, time with family, the happy spirit. I try to keep these things in the forefront of my mind when things become less than favorable. The icy roads, the stress of travel, the hustle of gift buying, the lines and crowds.

I wonder if my take on the holidays will be different this year now that we have Nora. I realize she will not understand what is happening and to her, holidays are no different than any other day. I expect a difference because we will be making new memories; buidling new traditions as a family.

This time of the year always comes and goes so quickly. I want to soak it in this year. I want to hear those bell ringers and smile and say "happy holidays" as I pass by.

bliss list ~ november

I've had much to be thankful for this month. And much to enjoy. Let's get to it!

Leaves ~ We had quite a warm fall and it seemed like the leaves didn't have the color or luster I remember. Still, I was able to appreciate the change in the seasons from our back patio as our maples turned bright orange and yellow. And it was even more enjoyable since I didn't have to rake this fall! :)

Apple Cider ~ This is the best fall treat. I love buying plain cider and doctoring it up myself. There's nothing like holding a warm mug and tasting the sweet spices. Last year Hubby and I drank apple cider while decorating for Christmas. We'll continue the tradition when we decorate this weekend.

Pajama Pants ~ When it begins getting dark at 5 pm, I give myself an automatic free ticket to get into pajamas as soon as I get home. I'm also following our pediatrician's orders of changing out of work clothes before I hold Nora so I don't spread student germs to her. I read this as get into your pajamas immediately! I feel it's important to follow doctor's orders.

Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock ~ Hubby and I and my family enjoyed some tastes of Sam Adams this Thanksgiving season. We bought the holiday pack so we could try some different seasonal brews. I am a huge fan of the Chocolate Bock. Normally a fan of dark and chocolate beers, this one did not disappoint. It had a good flavor and body and just the right amount of chocolate taste to be enjoyable and not overdone. I only wish they sold this flavor by itself and not just as 2 out of 12 in the holiday pack!

A full night's sleep ~ After 3 months of surviving on less sleep than I thought possible, Hubby and I are finally enjoying full nights of sleep. This does not mean Nora never wakes up but the times she does stir has drastically increased and we are able to sleepily stumble into her room, pop in her pacifier, and fall back into bed again. {More to come on how we finally got our sleep back.}
